]]>The first thing you may want to decide on is the type of laptop. There are about 3 major types of laptops. Firstly, the Notebook which is the more popular type – is a mini, portable computer system. Secondly, we have the Ultrabook which is similar to the notebook, but built to be lighter. Ultrabooks do not contain some inbuilt modules found in notebooks. Thirdly, we have 2-in-1 or convertible laptops. The 2-in-1 laptops are portable and can serve as tablets if detached from the keyboard section or if the laptop is folded.
Your operating system should either be a WIndows, Linux, Mac, or Chrome. Windows OS is owned by Microsoft and arguably has the most user-friendly of all operating systems. Linux is mostly open-source, does not have a great user interface, and has a steep learning curve. Mac OS is owned by Apple and is very picky with applications. Chrome OS is owned by Google and works mainly for users who do almost all their work using browsers.
We have Intel and AMD processors (CPU). The intel processors range from intel Celeron to the intel core i-series. Celeron is the least performing. Performance increases with the number of the series. For instance, an intel core i5 performs better than a core i3. Currently, intel core i-series range from core i3 to core i9.
AMD processors range from the slow-performing set (AMD A, FX or E Series) to the AMD Ryzen 4000 and Ryzen 5000. The Ryzen series are built to compete with Intel’s i-series. Therefore, the Ryzen 5000 performs better than Ryzen 4000. However, it has been noticed that the the AMD Ryzen series perform better than their intel counterparts. What’s more? They are even cheaper than intel processors.
Most laptops come with inbuilt graphics cards. But if you plan to use your laptop for video editing or mainly for gaming, Nvidia and Radeon graphic cards are better. Nvidia comes from Intel and Radeon from AMD. From observation, the Radeon graphics card series is better than their intel counterparts.
RAM is the random access memory that holds your data while you are working on your laptop. To a great extent it determines how fast your laptop will be. The higher the RAM, the better. The lowest memory in most laptops is 4gigabytes. However, you are better off with an 8GB memory. If you perform a lot of tasks on your laptop, you may need a 16GB, 32GB or 64GB RAM.
Ideally, the least storage space any laptop should have is 256GB. The higher the storage space though, the better.
The major ports you want to look out for are: HDMI, USB 3.0, USB Type-A, USB Type-C, Ethernet, SD Card and headphone jacks.
Some other things to consider include connectivity, battery life, brand and cost. Your laptop should have at least a Wi-Fi connection, and a Bluetooth connection. A good laptop should be able to run on a medium workload for at least 6 to 7 hours. Furthermore, mind the brand of the laptop. Popular brands like HP, Lenovo, Dell, etc. mean better and easier community and support. Finally, work with your budget based on all other factors.
