A Tray of Locust Beans, the anticipated short film from Lufodo Productions and Kinsman Studios, premieres at Filmhouse Landmark, Lagos. In addition, the film has earned an official selection at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) 2026.
The Above Whispers Media Foundation commissioned the film alongside the Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement. The premiere takes place on 5 November 2026. Afterwards, guests will join a post-film conversation on the issues the film explores. These include child protection and sexual violence against girls.

A Powerful Story of Survival from Bisi Fayemi
Renowned gender activist and writer Mrs Bisi Fayemi wrote the original short story. Above all, the film is a moving tribute to female strength, resilience and survival. Ololade Okedare and Ayobola Eniola adapted the story for the screen. Meanwhile, Orobosa Ikponmwen directs the film.
The story unfolds in Epe, Lagos State. It follows Mabel, a thirteen-year-old girl who struggles through a broken child welfare system. At the same time, she must survive the dangers of exploitative informal guardianship.

Cast and Executive Producers
Rising star Somachi Chilaka leads the cast. She stars alongside Nollywood legend Joke Silva and Korede Lawal. Furthermore, Joke Silva, Soji Jacobs and Mrs Bisi Fayemi serve as executive producers. Together, they deliver an urgent call to break the silence around sexual violence. Ultimately, the film urges society to protect vulnerable children in Nigeria.
“We are incredibly honoured that AFRIFF 2026 has recognised A Tray of Locust Beans,” said the production team. “This film addresses raw, systemic issues that people often sweep under the rug. Through Mabel’s story, we want to spark uncomfortable but necessary conversations about how our societies protect or fail to protect the girl child.”
Notably, the Lagos premiere gives the public its first chance to see the film. After that, it moves on to its scheduled screenings at AFRIFF 2026.
