Ejiro Amos Tafiri is one of Africa’s most celebrated fashion designers and a leading voice in Pan-African luxury fashion. For more than sixteen years, the Nigerian designer has used indigenous textiles, expert tailoring and masterful drapery to show the world that African fashion belongs among the finest in global luxury. This is the story of how a Yaba College of Technology alumna became “Nigeria’s Drape Queen.”
Who Is Ejiro Amos Tafiri?
Ejiro Amos Tafiri is the founder and creative director of her eponymous luxury fashion house, based in Lagos, Nigeria. Her brand is an indigenous fashion design, retail and educational company known for innovative designs, attention to detail and the use of locally sourced African fabrics.
She is also a mentor, industry advocate and the convener of the biennial Fashioning a Legacy Conference. Through her work, she has become one of the most influential figures shaping the future of the African fashion industry.

Early Beginnings: A Vision for African Luxury Fashion
Ejiro’s journey began at Yaba College of Technology in Lagos. From the start, she believed that African fabric deserved more than a place in traditional ceremonies. She saw it as true luxury, as worthy of global attention as any fabric from the fashion capitals of Europe.
That belief became the foundation of her fashion house. Rather than simply cutting and stitching, Ejiro specialised in drapery, folding and gathering fabric into gowns that flow with movement yet hold their shape like sculpture.

How She Became “Nigeria’s Drape Queen”
Her signature drapery quickly set her apart in the Nigerian fashion scene. Clients and critics in Lagos began calling her “Nigeria’s Drape Queen”, a title that has followed her throughout her career.
Her early awards confirmed her rising status:
- 2013: Fashion Film of the Year, City People Fashion and Beauty Awards
- 2014: Glam and Essence, the fastest-growing fashion brand
- 2015: Outstanding Emerging Designer, Heineken Lagos Fashion Week
- 2015: Designer of the Year, City People Fashion and Beauty Awards
- 2015: Award of Honour and Recognition for Nigerian Youth Skill Development, Yaba College of Technology
Sustainable Fashion Rooted in African Craftsmanship
Sustainability sits at the heart of the Ejiro Amos Tafiri brand. Every collection is handcrafted by skilled local artisans using indigenous fabrics sourced within Africa.
This approach does two important things. It preserves traditional textile techniques that might otherwise be lost, and it creates jobs and economic opportunities within Africa’s creative industry. For Ejiro, every garment carries both cultural heritage and social purpose.
Brand Partnerships and Global Recognition
As her reputation grew, major global brands took notice. Ejiro has served as a brand ambassador for Vlisco, Samsung, Belvedere and Heineken at different points in her career.
In 2016, she became a face of Vlisco’s 170th anniversary campaign for South Western Nigeria. That same year, she published her coffee table book, Ejiro Amos Tafiri: Inspirational Woman, and received the Achiever Alumni’s Excellence Award from the Rector of Yaba College of Technology. She also won the Creative Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the Awesome Treasures Foundation and the Rhoda Michaels Flame Leadership Award.
Her work has been featured on major platforms including CNN, Al Jazeera, Marie Claire and FabStyle magazine.
