Today, we’re discussing a novel for children. “Smile With African Style” by Mylo Freeman is an excellent children’s book. The author wrote and illustrated the novel in the most fun way to capture the hearts and interests of children and adults alike.

What we love most about the novel is the ability of Mylo to capture and describe different African cultures through their cultural attires. In addition, Mylo creates and presents the illustrations carefully. They artistically and beautifully represent many cultures within Africa. It is also worth noting that the characters in the novel come in different skin color tones. The novel points us to the fact that Africa is blessed with people of varying skin colors. In reality, the novel will make you “Smile with African Style”.

We highly recommend “Smile with African Style” for toddlers and preschoolers. It stimulates their imagination to visualize Africa and the variety of people in her. This novel will be an asset in any library in Africa and the world. It promises to deliver the message of Africa to young minds while also reminding the grown-ups that Africa is more than just a name.

Things they lost is one of the novels that you have to read word-for-word. It captures different depths of imagination and demands that you immerse yourself in the story if you want to truly appreciate it.

This is the story of a 12-year-old girl who sees into her country’s past. Living in a mystical Kenyan town/village where many things are magical, Ayosa the 12-year-old communicates with both good and evil ‘creatures’. There are the spirits of her grandmothers.

This novel reveals the deep effects of human relationships, especially between mothers and their daughters. We see how important we can be to each other and the things we neglect in our daily relationships. ‘Things they lost’ unravels the effects of broken promises, neglect and high expectations.

From the beginning to the end of the novel, Oduor strikes a perfect balance between being whimsical and satirical. It is a story of what humans, families and nations can lose given certain conditions.

Verdict

Although the novel sounds ominous, its details are presented in compelling humorous tones. The clear advice we get from ‘things they lost’ is that we can correct the things we are doing presently. We have the opportunity to create a better future by avoiding the mistakes of the past. It matters that something happened in the past, but what matters the most is what we are doing today and what future we eventually create.

“Things They Lost” – What might we do to create the kind of world we desire if the drama of the past were played black to us, exactly as it happened?

“Yinka, Where is Your Huzband?” is the debut novel of Lizzie Damilola Blackburn. It is a story about Yinka. The book has captured the hearts of many who have a lot of good things to say about it. In this article, we will review the novel.

Review

Yinka, where is your husband? Goodreads

“Meet Yinka: a thirty-something, Oxford-educated, British Nigerian woman with a well-paid job, good friends, and a mother whose constant refrain is ‘Yinka, where is your huzband?’” Goodreads. The story of Yinka sounds like a story for the young. However, it covers many areas, ranging from tradition, philosophy, and religion.

Yinka is like a lot of young women today faced with career, family, and finding love. As a successful career lady, her family, especially her mum and aunties do not seem to value how far she has come. They had made Yinka believe she was not enough and needed a “huzband”. The pressure is all too real for a lot of young women today.

Yinka had her friends too who were all flawed. Yinka was a bit of a mess herself. But all of us are a little bit of a mess – from time to time. Nevertheless, this novel reveals how all the characters grow from experience. In the story, we find Yinka’s journey to self-discovery in the most hilarious and warm way. Yinka also really had to “find a huzband” when push came to shove. Who wouldn’t, when her cousin is getting married and she so seriously needed to answer her mum’s and everyone’s question: “Where is your Huzband?” The rollercoaster of events that came with it will push you to the edge of your seat with raw emotions – laughter, anger, love, frustration.

In this novel, Lizzy highlighted some cultural issues prevalent in Africa and how they are currently being promoted and addressed. The hilarious and happy ending has us longing for more of Lizzy’s novels in the future.

Verdict

In all, we will give Yinka and her story some 4.5 out of 5 stars. The other 0.5 left for some people who expected less or more from the novel :).
