Probiotics are good for everyone when taken in the right amount. According to Cristy Dean, dietician and gut health specialist at Fettle and Bloom, “Probiotics are a combination of live beneficial bacteria, or yeast, that are native to our gut microbiome”. She further stated that probiotics keep us healthy and well, and can help to maintain the balance of bacteria which can get out of sync due to ill health and disease.

While these probiotics do a great deal of protective work in male and female bodies alike, women have so much to gain. The benefits vary though, depending on the probiotic constituents and the health condition of the person consuming them. Let us see some of the benefits of probiotics for women.

Benefits of Probiotics for Women

Great Gut Health

A lot of bacteria can be found in the gut. Some of them are good and some are ‘evil’. These two groups of bacteria are often at loggerheads. If the bad guys win, then the body sees an increased exposure to diseases. Probiotics taken constantly increase the number of good bacteria in the gut, or at least, keep the balance.

Mood Management

Now, when we have more of the good bacteria in the gut, our mental health sees some improvement. This happens because the bacteria mimic the hormones in the body and trigger some part of the brain that controls how we feel. If the good bacteria is at optimum levels, our mood is better, else, bad mood sets in.

Vaginal Health

There are bacteria that live in the vagina and they must always be in the right amounts. If the bacteria is too much or not enough, the imbalance causes some vaginal infections like candidiasis. The imbalance of bacteria also makes it easier to pick up some sexually transmitted infections. Probiotics taken orally and frequently help to maintain the balance of bacteria in the vagina. We won’t forget to mention that a healthy vagina means a healthy gut for a newborn baby. Obviously, pregnant women need probiotics

Improved Digestion

Probiotics make it easier for women to digest food. It is even better during pregnancy when the female hormones take their toll on the overall digestive process.

Finally, probiotics help women to have better and improved sleep as well as healthier skin.

How To Get Probiotics

Probiotics can be gotten from fermented meals. For instance, in Africa, some cereal foods are made out of fermented cereals like maize, millet, and guinea corn. There are also other fermented meals like kimchi and pickles. Greek yogurt or any other yogurt made with live culture are also great sources. It is worth noting though, that moderation and consistency are the best virtues in our daily living.

Do you feel exhausted after sitting at work all day? If you do, it goes to show that a physically active lifestyle is far better than a passive one. Recent studies have shown that adding just an extra 5 to 10 minutes of walking daily could prevent early death and promote longevity in most people.

When we talk about walking, we do not really mean a leisurely walk. Although, a relaxed stroll can be counted as exercise and physical activity. We are actually talking about walking briskly, or in a way that all your muscles feel the exertion. In addition, a more beneficial walk would have you short of breath for a few minutes. When you engage in fast walking or brisk walking, it should raise your heart rate and have you sweating.

Benefits of Walking

  1. It helps to relieve stiff joints and muscles by promoting proper lubrication. This means that walking can actually help prevent or improve osteoporosis and arthritis.
  2. By activating cardiovascular muscles to fitness, walking helps prevent or reduce cardiovascular diseases.
  3. Walking helps us burn fat and maintain optimum body weight by encouraging proper metabolism and digestion. Surprisingly, it also reduces cravings.
  4. The American Cancer Society led a study that showed that women who walked more had a 14% lower chance of getting breast cancer. Some other studies have also revealed that there is a positive relationship between walking actively and a reduced risk of other forms of cancer.
  5. It reduces the risks of Diabetes and improves the immune system generally.
  6. Walking as a form of exercise triggers and balances hormones in the body. It reduces stress hormones, improving mental health.

If you do not have time to walk for at least 5 to 10 minutes daily, you may want to make time for it starting today. It will be more beneficial to share your break time and use some of it to walk. You may decide to walk briskly while attending to various tasks in the house. For instance, walk briskly to the toilet or the kitchen, walk fast to your car, etc. As much as possible, reduce the amount of time you spend sitting or lying down.

A little walk is fine, more walking is better, but more fast walking or brisk walking is best to keep you fit, improve your mental health and promote longevity. If for any reason you cannot walk, any form of relatively vigorous exercise for at least 10 minutes daily will do just fine. Walk More, Exercise More for longer healthier life.

Disclaimer: Please consult your doctor before engaging in any new form of exercise.

Nigerians have spent almost 365 days battling a lingering pandemic. What started as little has grown to claim over 1,500 lives leaving thousands of others infected.

One unpopular topic of discussion, yet a popular challenge, is the effects of the pandemic on our mental health.  The impact of Covid-19 on the lifestyle and living conditions of Nigerians has left the mental health of many in a precarious condition.

Meet Chinwe Nwosu a Mental Health Ambassador, Master Life Coach, Founder and Chief Executive of Andromagik. She enlightened us on the mental health being the integral part of our existence. It’s signs and symptoms.

1: Tell me about yourself?

My name is Chinwe E. Nwosu, a Mental Health Ambassador, Master Life Coach, Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Andromagik Company. I am a business growth and sustainability enthusiast with experience in Human Resource and Administration Management, Customer Satisfaction and Experience, Fund Recovery, Business Development, Marketing and Sales. A Social Entrepreneur who is highly passionate about identifying institutional voids and actively devising possible ways to fill those voids. A Thought Leader driven by creativity, spontaneity and quest for innovation.

2: What made you choose to be a mental health advocate?

It’s a lot of reason that drove me into advocating for mental health, starting from the fact that experience teaches us, meaning I’ve been a victim of mental health distortion. I’ve had friends in my circle who had gone through the same, some more evident and intense than others. Sadly, it hits us all but we don’t even know what it means, so we assume it’s just part of life. Another reason is that we don’t even take it seriously in this part of the world. When we hear a lad jump off 3MB, we just assume it’s our “villagers”.

3: What does mental health mean to you?

Mental health is generally, emotional and psychological well being. You take care of your body to avoid ailments, you take care of your mind to avoid ailment too. If I would put it in it’s simplest form, it is sanity to me. It is an integral part of our existence, if not the most integral part, it affects how you treat yourself, people around you, how you react and counter react, how you act… right about everything.

4: Is it happiness or the absence of happiness?

Presence of a sound mental health is pure happiness, extreme joy and satisfaction, of course you can imagine what it’s absence would be.

5: What are your thoughts regarding the signs and symptoms of mental health issue?

Majority of the signs and symptoms of mental health issues are very insignificant at first. We often think it is until there’s an obvious sign but the truth is, mental disorder is a farther/extreme sign of mental health issue. Various mental health issues have numerous different symptoms. For instance depression might lead you to withdraw from the society, cause you to lose interest in right about everything that makes you tick initially. Anxiety might start off by feeding on your fears, cause you unhealthy sleeping partners. Panic attack might get you breathing heavily from thinking of things you cannot even pinpoint. Biplolar could make you happy this second and sad the next, for untraceable reasons.. extreme highs and lows.

6: Have you ever experienced a terrible occurrence that has impacted you significantly?

Yes, absolutely, we all have had these experiences even when we don’t get to find a name tag to it or wish to accept it. Whether it is the lost of a loved one, or a relationship, gory experiences, work stress, unhealthy expectations, and so on.

7: Do feelings of anxiety or discomfort around others bother you?

If I do get this question rightly, then I’d say making conscious efforts to keep my mental health in check has helped.

8: Most Nigerians aren’t conversant with mental health issues, some are still uninformed especially those in the rural area who couldn’t access social media, how do you think this gap can be filled?

It’s not exactly a function of urban or rural area, in this part of the world, we don’t take it seriously. Truth be told, we need more outreaches, we need more ambassadors, we need more support groups, we need more safe spaces. Andromagik Company has started it’s bit but we sure can never do it alone. Let’s have programs, let’s go on trips to the safer rural areas, let’s educate the younger ones first in schools, let them translate it to their parents, let us just… never stop talking about it.

9: What do you believe is important for anyone to be aware of if they know someone with this mental health issue?

Please, first of all, listen to the words people don’t even speak. Listen, pay attention and please do not judge. If you cannot help them to get calm at the earlier stage, please SIGNPOST them to the right people.
