It’s founder Ms. Lara Rawa, an award-winning mixologist, started off the Press Conference by highlighting the carefully chosen theme of the Lagos Cocktail Week; Diversification and Identifying new Opportunities.

Ms. Rawa mentioned that the inspiration behind the theme is born out of the need to educate the attendees who have scaled through a difficult time as a result of the pandemic.

The Lagos Cocktail week team and its’ partners placed an emphasis on the importance of art and innovation. Specifically, in its 7th edition emphasis will be made on the role of networking and the use of social media to drive growth. A sponsor, Diageo, one of the largest producers of spirits, will be providing a masterclass as a symbol of it’s commitment towards the industry and stakeholders. “The bar battle is the highlight of the Lagos Cocktail Week”, Ms Lara Rawa said.. The 7th edition of the bar battle will differ from the previous years’. In the past, the bar battle consisted of mixologists from Lagos based restaurants and bars. This year, the participants can be independent mixologists. The purpose of the change is to; promote inclusivity, create opportunities, serve as a platform for promotion and growth as highlighted in the event’s theme.

Furthermore, another significant change is that there will be four challenges this year and a winner for each challenge. These challenges are The Johnnie Walker Challenge, Absolut Challenge, Beer Challenge (Star Radler & Desperados) and Fayrouz Challenge. An exciting raffle draw was held at the press conference to determine what challenges each mixologist will participate in.

To conclude the event, the judges and the bar battle sponsors gave specific guidelines and their expectations for the challenges. In particular, Ms Ronke Bamgbade, Sommelier & Master Bartender Spronks Prive mentioned that competitors need to embody the art of mixology, be authentic, creative and prioritize the art of flavour blending. Oluwaferanmi Ogundipe is the CEO and co-founder of BARE. BARE is an innovative tech start-up that provides skincare + product recommendations for black men, and women using Artificial Intelligence technology. Red Edit had a chat with Oluwaferanmi where she revealed the most problems recurrent with black skin types. She also gives us insight into what it is like being a business owner around the beauty and tech space. This is an interview with loads of insight so take advantage of it.

Red Edit: Can you introduce yourself to the readers?

Oluwaferanmi Ogundipe: My name is Oluwaferanmi Ogundipe and I am the founder of Bare. Bare is a platform that gives recommendations for black and brown skin using Artificial Intelligence. My background ranges between project management, brand strategy, and event production amongst others.

Red Edit: How did the BARE idea come about?

Oluwaferanmi Ogundipe: The idea for BARE came when we realized we couldn’t find enough data around black skin. These data could not easily be accessible like data for Caucasian skin. We also understand a lot of people do not know how to navigate skincare as there are many products on the market so it can be daunting finding a product for dark and brown skin types. So that is how we came about BARE. BARE is a safe space and we provide information from the ingredients in products which is good for your skin, to effective brands and products in the market. We analyze skin types, talk about skin concerns, and how to treat them. We have a safe space where people can share personal concerns and open up about their skin problems.

Red Edit: How did you find yourself in the tech space. What made you and your team decide to merge skincare and technology?

Oluwaferanmi Ogundipe: Before BARE, I had an eCommerce store, doing that got me into a tech incubator. With the tech incubation program, I and my co-founders developed another idea aimed at sourcing ingredients to help people create products. Along the line, someone suggested we find products for skincare. That is how we moved from helping people create products to giving people research data to help them create products. Then we move to how do we help people with skincare problems solve them. That’s how we found ourselves in data science and artificial intelligence space.

Red Edit: Is the BARE app free?

Oluwaferanmi Ogundipe: It is free to an extent. The skincare analysis and product recommendation are free. But as we grow and evolve, I don’t know if it would be free.

Red Edit: With the skincare data you have on the BARE app so far, what are the common concerns related to black and brown skin?

Oluwaferanmi Ogundipe: The main issue that comes up is Hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation occurs when part of the skin becomes deeply pigmented than the normal tone of the skin. Black people don’t use a lot of sunscreens, we also don’t have a lot of real guidance on solving skincare problems. People do a lot of home remedies which results in scarring and the way scarring occurs in black skin is hyperpigmentation and dark spots. So a lot of issues we get when people come to our website is “I have dark spots.”

Red Edit: What’s the target market for your brand?

Oluwaferanmi Ogundipe: Our Target market is currently in Nigeria: Lagos, Abuja, and Kumasi, Ghana. Our clients currently are 20% men and 80% women.

Red Edit: How accessible and affordable are these products you recommend?

Oluwaferanmi Ogundipe: For accessibility, we try to make sure that the product we recommend is currently on ground. We also buy from reliable brands and stock up so the products we recommend are available. Alternatively, you can also get products from another brand and stock up if we are sure that these brands have authentic products. Affordable skincare products can be pricey, and people are really concerned about pricing. We also see if we can get the product people need on the app at a reasonable rate, but not cheap.

Red Edit: What are the challenges your brand encounters as a tech and skincare startup operating in Africa? How are you solving these challenges?

Oluwaferanmi Ogundipe: The major challenge is the supply of these products into the country. One of the most interesting bottlenecks we have is supplying products, and that is because the supply chain isn’t very organized in this country. We also find a way to mitigate the troubles that may arise that is why we get to buy wholesale so we make sure that these products are available regardless of what may be happening in the country at that time. There is also the problem of counterfeit products so we try as much as possible to get products from brands that have approval certificates.

Another challenge is incorporating local brands into our systems because they find it difficult to get approval from the government and we do not recommend brands that are not approved by the government. We get local brands who reach out to us and complain that we are not recommending their products. Even though we want to, we cannot recommend a product that doesn’t have the right credentials. To solve this problem, we are trying to partner with She Trades Africa, to create a framework for local brands to be able to get the certification they need so we can recommend them. Also to help these local brands so they can create products that are scientifically proven than products that are just on a hunch.

A general problem we are also facing is an investment. Sadly investment doesn’t drop like water from the sky. In general, running a business in Africa is not easy. The government who should be helping isn’t helping themselves. Getting people to join the team and be committed is also an issue. In all, we are hopeful and we think the market is ripe for what we are doing.

Red Edit: In this part of the world, are people really interested in skincare? There’s an assumption that some Africans except the elite ones don’t care for their skin, what’s your take on that?

Oluwaferanmi Ogundipe: I differ from the notion that Africans don’t care about their skin. The statistics are different from what most people think, everyone cares about their skin. It may not be the typical care about toning or fancy things, but they care about the products around them. Skincare has a wide industry. You can see that from Beverly Naya’s documentary, Skin. On a scale of 1-10. At least 7 people would care about their skin. We are focused on the ones who care about their skin and we want to make sure these people that care have information about the right products, and everything else.

Red Edit: Any Final words?

Oluwaferanmi Ogundipe: I hope people take advantage of this and we can stop people from damaging their skin because they don’t have certain information. As a community, there’s a conversation around toning, bleaching, and others. Our goal is to give as many people access to resources so they do what is right for their skin.

Red Edit: This has been an enlightening interview, we hope our skincare lovers get in on this opportunity and make use of the resources on BARE.

Oluwaferanmi Ogundipe: I hope so too. Thank you so much for having me.

When it comes to fashion, every accessory counts. Almost everyone has in mind what they would like to have as an engagement ring. However, here’s the thing. If you are shopping for an engagement ring, it is almost like a surprise to the other party and you cannot give them clues about what you are about to do. Except it isn’t a surprise.

It can be really exhausting going about it, so this read would tell you what to do when shopping for an engagement ring.

1) Go To the Store On-Time:

Once, you have decided to propose, you need to hit ring stores that same day or the next. If possible visit wedding stores. This would help put you in the realization that this is really happening. It would help you filter if you are ready to make this commitment or not. You also can get acquainted with the rings, set your price point, and know if what you may want for your spouse is possible considering your income. You know if the engagement ring is happening or you need to save for it.

Source: Google Images

2) Ring Material:

Once you have done your pre-checks, now you can settle down to think about what material you want for your ring: metal, plastic, you name it. Also, what color do you have in mind, is it white gold, silver, rose gold, yellow gold, the list is endless. Think about your partner’s taste and your budget. Nonetheless, when it comes to love, you are allowed to splurge a little. Especially for something significant as an engagement ring.

3) Carat Size/ Cut:

The carat size is a big deal. Depending on your budget, you could get good quality or less. In as much as the budget is important, knowledge is everything. If possible tag along with a friend, who knows about engagement rings, just ask around. Your partner’s taste matters a whole lot: pear shape, heart shape, what is their style? You don’t want to propose to your partner and they are like, “you could have done better with the ring.”

4) Size Size Size:

Extremely important. You don’t want an ill-fitted ring that would inconvenience your partner. If loose, better, you can always refit. Tight? Hell no. Very uncomfortable. Put effort into getting your partner’s ring size so the fit can be perfect.

5) Certification:

Go to a trustworthy dealer. Get your certification just in case you may want to resale, or for historical purposes. Always ask for the ring’s certification. Make sure you are getting the certification that is for the ring you are purchasing. Maybe if you are buying fake stones, you may not need it. However, certification is very important.

Weddings are the biggest events to dress up for. However, there are so many rules on what to wear to a wedding which largely depends on the taste and culture of the couple. The problem with dressing up for a wedding varies from location to theme. For instance, there is stuff you can wear to a garden wedding but can’t wear to a church wedding. Some couples would allow the color black on their day, others won’t find that funny.

Never forgetting the ultimate, “I don’t want to see you wear white” from the bride. Although some couples don’t mind their guests wearing the color white, they might not want you dressing extravagantly and taking up the attention. Then again some couples would be pretty pissed if make no efforts. These are the problems. However, this read would help you sort out styles to wear as a wedding guest.

1) A WRAP DRESS

All you have to do is make sure you wear the appropriate color, and you are good to go. A wrap dress can be dressed up or dressed down depending on the accessories. Wrap dresses are almost perfect for every body type.

2) A SUIT

It could be a tux or a skirt. Whatever it is, you would be appropriately dressed. The right color especially if it is a themed wedding is everything. Accessorize with brooches, elegant and comfortable shoes, the right jewelry, ties, and headpiece if you may.

3) EVENING DRESSES

When it comes to weddings, evening dresses are appropriate all around. Bear in mind that cultures play a huge factor. You wouldn’t want to go to a hardcore Arab wedding in an evening dress with cleavage popping or lower back all out. There are evening dresses appropriate for all cultures. So make sure you get in line and don’t embarrass your hosts.

I hope you find this read helpful. Our next read at weddings would talk about the colors you should most likely avoid when going to a wedding and we would tell you why.

]]>
Whether you love tattoos or not, tattoos are a big deal, and it is part of the art of fashion. Today, we will share our favorite tattoo looks and some tips you should consider before getting a tattoo done. Before you get a tattoo, these are things to consider:

1) Research:

Don’t take these lightly. Research your skin type, ask questions, get your answers from professionals and people who have had their skin marked before. Be sure of who you surrender your skin to. You don’t want a butterfly tattoo and then what you would see is a moon when the artist is done. There are many lousy tattoo scenarios of what I order Vs. what I got. Nobody wants that. You can’t bear all that pain and not be satisfied after the tattoo has been done.

2) How safe is this for you?

Take a tattoo to be liposuction or a severe life surgery because it is serious. So consider these questions. Is the artist you are using licensed? Have they done things like this before? How efficient are his tools? Does the artist sterilize his instruments and take health importantly? You need to know all of these things because you don’t want any diseases or complications from getting a tattoo.

3) What you want to get a tattoo:

Be careful what you put on your body. There are so many signs that have deeper meanings. So you don’t want to get a tattoo on a drunk night; you need to be intentional about it.

4) Be Prepared:

Are you sure you are mentally prepared for this? Bear in mind that getting a tattoo is a painful process, and if you want to take it off, it would be worse and involve more pain. So ask yourself why you are doing this and if it is truly necessary. Not that you are overthinking it but being certain is better than having to endure regrets. You can start with hidden areas to test if it is really for you or what you want. For example, it is unwise to have a boyfriend’s/girlfriend’s name on your neck. If there’s a breakup, you have to explain to people why “John or Jane” is written on your neck till it’s taken off.

5) Aftercare:

After getting the tattoo done, that is not all, as you need to take proper care so it heals. You may also need regular touch-ups in the future. The question now is, are you ready for this sort of commitment? If you aren’t, there are temporary tattoos such as henna that you could try out.

Now you know if you want a tattoo, these are our favorite tattooed beauties:

So we woke up to the news of Kirby Jenner being a fraternal twin to Kendall Jenner. You may try to wrap your head around it and ponder on whether or not this is real. Well, we love a good fashion family, so we researched this news so you can get the facts.

To relieve you of the suspense, Kirby Jenner isn’t related to the Kard-Jenners. We have proof and these are the reasons why Kirby Jenner is not a true jenner.

1) The Kardashian – Jenner Family can’t keep it a secret:

Forget about Kylie’s pregnancy. Something as big as another sibling isn’t something they would easily keep a secret. Even if he didn’t want to be on the show, we would see him at least during some of the parties they like to throw. Asides we know all of the Jenner brothers and Robert Kardashian have been called the only Kardashian son for a long time. Except they are liars.

2) The E! Network won’t let that:

We know Kourtney had rifts on the show because she wasn’t sharing enough. That is a part the network would have loved to milk. Also if they have kept the secret for so long, why take it to another network to be revealed? They won’t let that happen.

3) NO documents:

The Kard-Jenner family loves to document memories, one thing we look for is at least a clip of Kirby Jenner being born. Sadly, that wasn’t available because it didn’t exist. No baby photos, no memories, just skills of merging adult photos together which I would kindly regard as photoshops. If he had access to their baby photos, he would do the same.

4) Photoshop photoshop photoshop:

It is all photoshop as proven in the images below. Although Kirby still claims he can’t photoshop. We know he is a poser brother of the Jenners.

Now we know Kirby Jenner isn’t anywhere near being a true Jenner. We can understand that the show would be about a boy who fantasizes about being a Jenner brother and is probably getting close to being there. The show is executive produced by Kris Jenner and Kendall Jenner as well. I would watch the show for comedy’s sake, would you?

You don’t have to be an animal or pet lover to enjoy the cutest clips of them. However, if you are an animal lover then brace yourself for a double treat. These clips are funny, cute, and would gladden your heart out. Enjoy!

1) A man backing his dog, and surfing. We pray he doesn’t fall because it seems like the person who would feel the impact is certainly not the dog. It also reminds me of African mothers backing their babies. We hope the surf ride truly ends well.

2) Just when you thought life in the animal kingdom is full of bonding, you discover cats get jealous too.

3) Wow! You couldn’t just jump over too? Apparently from this clip, we get to know that animals are super lazy too. But why they have to do that cat dirty?
